MSS SP-58 Hanger Types, Explained

MSS SP-58 — "Pipe Hangers and Supports: Materials, Design, Manufacture, Selection, Application, and Installation" — is the reference standard most projects cite when they specify pipe supports. Published by the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS), it defines the standard component types, their materials, allowable loads and how they should be selected and installed. If your project spec says "hangers to MSS SP-58", this guide tells you what that means in practice.

In one sentence: MSS SP-58 gives every common support component a standard "Type" number and a set of design rules — so a "Type 1 clevis hanger" means the same thing to your stress engineer, your buyer and your supplier.

What the standard covers

  • Component definitions — the standard support hardware, each with a type number and standard proportions.
  • Materials and temperature limits — which steels are acceptable for which service temperature ranges.
  • Load ratings — how allowable loads are established and verified.
  • Selection and spacing — recommended support spacing and rod sizing per pipe size.
  • Fabrication and installation practice — including spring hanger travel stops, adjustment and inspection.

Earlier editions split selection/application rules into a companion standard, MSS SP-69; current practice consolidates these into SP-58. Projects also commonly cite ASME B31.1 (power piping) or B31.3 (process piping) alongside it — those codes govern the piping itself, while SP-58 governs the support hardware.

Commonly specified component types

The standard defines dozens of numbered types. These are the ones that appear on most support schedules we quote:

Spring hanger arrangements: the A–G convention

For variable and constant spring hangers, support drawings almost always call out an installation arrangement letter — a convention originating with the major US hanger manufacturers and used worldwide alongside SP-58 type numbers. Exact geometry varies by manufacturer's catalogue (and is confirmed on our per-tag data sheets), but the intent of each letter is consistent:

How to call this out on an RFQ

  • Quote the standard and edition your project uses: e.g. "Supports to MSS SP-58, latest edition."
  • For rigid hardware, the type number and pipe size are usually enough: "Type 3 double-bolt clamp, DN200, A105 nuts/bolts, HDG finish."
  • For spring supports, add the arrangement letter and load data: "Variable spring hanger, arrangement B, hot load 12 kN, travel 30 mm up." See our selection guide for the full data checklist.
