How to Specify a Variable Spring Hanger

A variable spring hanger enquiry often begins with a load value or a support mark. That is useful, but it is rarely the complete set of information needed to review an arrangement.

The purpose of a good enquiry package is not to make assumptions on behalf of the piping designer. It is to separate the information that is already known from the information that still needs to be confirmed.

1. Identify the support mark and service condition

Start with the support mark or tag used in the hanger schedule or drawing. The same mark should appear consistently across the BOQ, drawing and related notes. If the enquiry includes more than one operating condition, identify which data belongs to each condition.

2. Provide hot and cold loads when available

Hot and cold loads are useful inputs for reviewing a variable spring hanger enquiry. If only one load is available, label it clearly rather than assuming whether it represents an operating or installation condition.

The supporting calculation and final selection remain dependent on the actual project data. A preliminary review should not be treated as production approval.

3. State vertical movement and direction

Movement information should include the expected vertical movement and its direction where available. If the movement has not yet been confirmed, mark it as pending. A missing movement value should not be replaced with an estimated figure in a purchasing document.

4. Show the available installation space

Available height and surrounding space can affect the arrangement that may be considered. A drawing, marked-up detail or dimensioned sketch is more useful than a general note such as “space limited.”

5. Define top and bottom connection details

Connection details help explain how the hanger assembly relates to the supporting structure and pipe attachment. Useful information may include the upper support condition, the lower connection or pipe clamp arrangement and any project-specific interface shown on the drawing.

6. Attach the hanger schedule, BOQ or drawing

A coordinated document set makes clarification easier. At minimum, keep support marks, quantities and drawing references consistent. Where a field is unknown, use “to be confirmed.”

7. Separate enquiry review from final confirmation

An enquiry review can identify missing information and support technical clarification. Final selection, materials, documentation requirements and supply scope must be confirmed against the actual project data before production.
